Brain fog, night sweats, joint aches, anxiety and disrupted sleep in your thirties don't always mean menopause is on your mind and that's exactly why early menopause so often goes undiagnosed for years...
If any of that sounds familiar, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. This World Menopause Day - 18th October, I wanted to share why: my own experience of early menopause in my thirties, as a nurse practitioner and the founder of Essence Wellness.
The Symptoms No One Connected
In my early thirties, I began getting a variety of symptoms that at first I didn't even know if they were connected they didn't really have an obvious pattern: brain fog sometimes I struggled to finish a sentence or forgetting really simple words, anxiety that appeared from nowhere, disrupted sleep, and hip pain that started one day with no real cause and lasted months. At one point, I genuinely questioned if I had early onset dementia...
I also had endometriosis, which I believe complicated the picture considerably. Overlapping pain, hormonal fluctuation, and inflammation made it harder for anyone, myself included, to separate one condition from another. When I raised my symptoms with my GP, I was told it was likely stress or anxiety. I really felt they thought it was all in my head, my bloods were all relatively normal, however I never did ever had a hormonal blood panel though.
Searching for Answers MyselfFrom Personal Experience to Clinical Purpose
Many women are offered HRT as the default solution, and for some it's the right choice (for transparency I use HRT). But for women who want to support their symptoms without increasing hormone levels, or who are looking for options alongside HRT, non-pharmaceutical approaches have an important role to play.
Among the therapies I offer at Essence Wellness, Red Light Therapy is my personal favourite for menopause support. Delivered via a full body red light therapy bed, it's anti inflammatory, supports joint and muscle aches, and works at a cellular level to support the body's natural repair processes, something I genuinely believe as a superhero of longevity. For women navigating the inflammatory and musculoskeletal symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, it offers a gentle, evidence informed way to feel more like themselves.
Alongside this, treatments that work directly on the nervous system, supporting the shift from a stressed, sympathetic dominant state into calm and regulation, form a core part of how I help clients ease anxiety, sleep disruption, and mood changes linked to hormonal change. This World Menopause Month
If any of this sounds familiar, whether it's night sweats you've dismissed as normal, brain fog you can't explain, or a feeling that no one is quite listening, please know that early menopause and perimenopause symptoms are real, valid, and deserving of proper investigation. At Essence Wellness, I offer non-hormonal menopause support in Cumbria, including red light therapy and nervous system focused treatments, for women looking for options beyond HRT alone.
