Peptides in Skincare: Trend or Essential?

Peptides are currently dominating the conversation in aesthetics and health. They are often positioned as something new, but they're not. They have been a core part of professional skincare for years, and I have personally been using them in my own clinic here at Essence, Maryport, Cumbria since the early stages of working in the industry.

They have been popularised across social media over recent months. Lets pick it apart.

Peptides are not a trend. They are a functional component of skin health and, when used correctly, play a central role in achieving long-term skin results.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. These amino acids form proteins such as collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the structure, strength, and resilience of the skin.

Peptides act as messengers. They signal the skin to:

As these signals decline with age, the skin becomes slower to repair, and visible ageing accelerates.

What Do Peptides Actually Do?

Not all peptides perform the same function. Grouping them together as one category is where most skincare advice loses credibility. To understand peptides properly, they need to be broken down by role.

Collagen-Stimulating Peptide

Matrixyl Synthe'6 is one of the most well researched peptides in skincare and is focused on rebuilding the skin's structure. It stimulates the production of:

It stimulates the production of:

Clinically this leads to:

Here at Essence, in Maryport, Cumbria we partner with AlumierMD, Matrixyl Synthe'6 can be found in:

Repair & Regenerative Peptides Copper Peptides

Copper peptides, such as Copper Tripeptide-1, are centred around repair and skin regulation.

They are clinically valuable for:

In AlumierMD, a key example is:

This is particularly relevant for:

Inflammation Control Peptides

Acetyl Hexapeptide-49 this peptide works differently from commonly marketed "botox-like" peptides.

Its primary role is to:

This can be found in Intradermology Synergy 6, which is a daily SPF that incorporates peptide technology this is what makes it such a hero product and why it is a firm favourite with not only myself but many of my patients here at Essence, in Cumbria.

It is not only protecting the skin from UV damage it is actively improving how the skin behaves reducing inflammaging.

Why Peptides Are Trending Now

There are two main drivers behind the rise in peptide-based skincare:

Shift towards regenerative aesthetics
Clients are moving away from short-term fixes and focusing on long-term skin health and function.

Improved formulations
Advancements in skincare have made peptides more stable and more effective at penetrating the skin, leading to better results.

The Problem With Most Peptide Skincare

Not all peptide products are created equally.

Many over-the-counter options:

This results in minimal visible improvement.

Professional formulations, such as AlumierMD, are designed to deliver peptides at clinically effective levels, with supporting ingredients that enhance performance.

Where Peptides Fit in a Treatment Plan

Peptides should not be treated as standalone products. They are most effective when integrated into a structured treatment plan:

When investing in treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels, or IPL, peptides play a key role in protecting and maximising results.

Final Position

Peptides need to be understood properly to deliver results.

When used correctly, peptides are not an optional extra. They are a foundational component of effective, results driven skincare.

The difference is not whether peptides are used.
It is how they are selected, formulated, and integrated into a treatment strategy.
